I've liked pretty much every version they've shown. I would not be as crazy about a plastic-bumppered stripper version, however.

This car definitely need a roof light bar.
You never have too much lights.

As a long time XJ cherokee fan, This is the best picture of tue new cherokee I've seen yet. But there is still two problems, it's drivetrain is FWD based and the loaded trail hawk is $40k....

The C&D review had its upper bounds listed at $30k in the side bar. So I dunno.
And AWD is part of the future man. Like direct injection and lightweight alloys.

you know I really like that article and the pictures are beautiful but not a single one of those off-road shots couldn't have been done in a crown vic. It doesn't really sell me on the idea that this is the real deal.

Man that thing hurts to look at.
That and ZF is having trouble getting the 8speed to work with it (sounds like a nightmare in about 5 years)
Plus, why not pony up a few more bucks and get the DIESEL Grand Cherokee? 420 ftlbs!!
I mean 420, not one more or one less.
I see what I did there.

It's not the AWD that I have an issue with really it's the fact that its FWD based, it kind of puts a chastity belt on the off-road enthusiast when it comes to more serious modifications, but at the same time, the Cherokee is no longer marketed to the serious off road enthusiast. I probably preach this too much but it's hit me hard in the feels.

Polarizing, but bold. I think this will grow on a lot of people, as it has on me. In Trailhawk form, especially, it looks like a futuristic planetary exploration vehicle.

I priced a Trailhawk out with leather and a lot of the options - $37,165.00. I'd have to drive it. I think it looks nice and anything has to be better than the Compass/Patriot/Old Cherokee in terms of, well, everything. To be honest, we're not looking at this as a possible purchase, we're waiting for the Porsche Macan to go on sale and then hopefully scoop up a used Cayenne. Our hope/assumption is that a lot of people will go for new Macans and Cayenne prices will fall.

Good idea/point. But it's kind of an apples to oranges comparison. Arguably, you might be able to say the same thing about the JGC after the new Cherokee hits the street.

Well Jeep people don't like change. What can you really expect?

If you're buying a Patriot/Conpass replacement as a serious off-roader, you need to manage your expectations.

Absolutely with regard to a JGC. The question is what can you get in the price range? Does it meet your requirements? Are you willing to forgo a new-car warranty?
I think a Porsche will cost more to work on, no doubt, but not as bad as you would think. My former Focus ST (2006) cost an arm and a leg for everything. New alternator: $700. My wife and I can't remember what it was, but we had a repair that cost $2k. And then it blew up. Literally, the engine blew on it. Repair bill: $7k. I didn't bother.
So any new car can potentially cost an arm and a leg. So it's not really apples to oranges, it just different apple breeds. An orange would be comparing the Cherokee to a sports cars.

The Apples to Oranges line was not about new to old. I meant in terms of class. Size wise, the Cherokee competes with the Macan, not the Cayenne.

There is one major thing wrong with what you just said. The new Cherokee isn't intended as a replacement for the Patriot/compass, Its intended as a replacement for the Liberty, which was the replacement for the XJ Cherokee. And even the Jeep liberty was capable of being modified and upgraded for more serious 4x4ing.
And because the drive train layout was a simple RWD, transfer case based layout even solid axle swaps are relatively simple. But now it has practically been rendered impossible due to the new FWD based layout.

Ah. That's where the disconnect comes from then. Where I'm from, and i mean this in a completely true and uninsulting way, the Patriot is almost exclusively drive by women that want something capable and "rugged" but get tricked into thinking Subies are for lesbians. :\
